Three Rivers Health Nurses Receive Excellence Awards from Michigan Center for Nursing
Three Rivers Health hosted a reception and award presentation for three outstanding nurses on their staff on November 18, 2005, in the Medical Center dining room.
Karen Lynn Long, RN; Kellie Schnell, RN; and Melissa Garrison, FNP, MSN, RN; were each recognized for winning the Institute of Nursing ExcellenceAward, sponsored by the Michigan Center for Nursing and the Michigan Organization of Nurse Executives (MONE).

“Karen, Kellie, and Missie were chosen for their outstanding performance, knowledge, leadership skills, and their loyal support to the hospital and community,” said Matt Chambers, president and CEO of Three Rivers Health. “We could not be more proud of them, and of all our nursing staff,” he continued. Chambers and Nancy Buscher, vice president of nursing, presented the nurses with crystal plaques on behalf of Three Rivers Health.
The selection process was rigorous and lengthy, with each nurse having been nominated by someone such as a colleague or patient. Once the nurses were nominated, they completed an information packet that included recommendations and a statement of their personal accomplishments and career goals. The medical center administration then approved the packets and submitted them to the Michigan Center for Nursing. The selectors did not know the names or place of employment for the nurses.
“This is a tremendous honor for our medical center as a whole,” commented Chambers. Long, Schnell, and Garrison are among only 33 nurses in the state of Michigan to receive this honor. The purpose of the Nursing Excellence Award is to acknowledge outstanding nurses who give direct patient care, to encourage them to remain in the profession, to improve their capacity for leadership, and to enhance their ability to be role models and to attract other individuals into the profession of nursing.
The awards qualify the nurses to attend the upcoming Institutes of Nursing Excellence Conference, a three-day event designed to develop leadership talent. Participants learn the “how to’s” of teamwork, motivating others, self-renewal skills, cultural sensitivities, and institutional change.
These three recipients join Karen Goodman, RN, who was named as their first Nursing Excellence Award recipient in May 2005. |
