Our Nurse Midwives Cited for Excellence
 | bb | The American College of Certified Nurse Midwives (ACNM) has notified Three Rivers Health Women’s Services that their nurse midwives have achieved best practices benchmark recognition.
Ruth Anson (left) and Janie Allgor (right), both of whom are certified nurse midwives (CNMs), were congratulated for their low rate of pitocin-induced births, which means that most births are natural. According to the study, when pitocin is used, it can lead to other interventions, which can result in longer hospital stays, increased costs, and possible complications for the mother and baby.
“This lower rate suggests your midwives are doing |
something to prevent setting off a cascade of interventions,” commented Dr. Kerri Durnell Schuiling, professor and assistant dean of Northern Michigan University’s College of Nursing Education.
The purpose of the benchmarking survey is to improve and maintain the quality of midwifery care provided to women and children. The study included medical offices across the nation, and Three Rivers Health Women’s Services had one of the lowest pitocin-induced birth rates, just 1.6 percent for 304 births in 2005.
“We are very pleased with this news,” commented Laurie Herbert, VP of operations at Three Rivers Health. “Janie and Ruth work closely with moms throughout their pregnancy and are usually present throughout the entire labor and delivery,” she continued. Women’s Services obstetricians Dr. Infante and Dr. Steenstra are available for consultation and back up if needed. Women’s Services always offers women the choice of having their pregnancy managed by either a midwife or physician. “The majority of our patients choose a midwife for this care,” added Herbert.
Anson and Allgor are both graduates of Case Western University’s Master of Science in Nursing program and the Frontier School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in Kentucky. Allgor is also a certified lactation consultant, helping moms to have a successful start with breast feeding.
