Three Rivers Health Laboratory Achieves Joint Commission Accreditation
On August 15, Three Rivers Health Laboratory successfully passed its Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (Joint Commission or JCAHO) survey after three extensive days of inspection. “It is our undeniable privilege and pleasure to recognize all the outstanding laboratory staff who keep quality patient care consistently in the forefront, whether in a more visible role as phlebotomists or a less visible role as technicians, said Heidi Alexander, Laboratory Manager. “Together with the hospital staff, this team of conscientious professionals is deserving of congratulations and gratitude for all that each one has done to contribute to this successful inspection and ultimately to the quality patient care that is offered to this community, which was acknowledged by the inspector as she completed the survey,” continued Alexander.

There are numerous areas that fall under the scope of the laboratory survey. In addition to the main laboratory that handles the majority of the inpatient and outpatient testing, other areas inspected include all of the laboratory testing performed in the seven hospital-owned clinics and offices, all of the point-of-care testing done in the nursing departments, and the blood gas testing and tissue implantation process done in the Surgery Department.

The JCAHO surveyor was a Boston resident and a very experienced individual with longevity at the Joint Commission. She has conducted around 1,700 surveys and has also participated in training many other surveyors in the survey process.

Laboratory accreditation is one of the functions of the Joint Commission, which is a regulatory agency. Federal law requires that all laboratories be surveyed every two years in order to maintain accreditation. Surveys are unannounced, and the surveyor can show up on any day or at any time.
