Expanded Cancer Support Group to Meet December 15
A newly expanded Cancer Support Group will meet on Tuesday, December 15th, at Three Rivers Health. This support group is open to survivors of all types of cancer, from those who are newly diagnosed through those who have survived for many years.
“The group will offer education and support,” said Kim Rogers, MSN, RN, who is a 20-plus year breast cancer survivor and experienced support group leader. “This group started with a focus on breast cancer, but we realize people with all forms of cancer face similar challenges and they all can benefit from education and support,” she continued.
The meeting will be held in the St. Joseph Conference Room at Three Rivers Health, beginning at 6:30 pm. The two-hour meeting will begin with an informative presentation, followed by refreshments and a support group discussion.
The topic for the December 15th meeting is “Gifts in Cancer,” presented by Gay Walker, Program Coordinator for the Holistic Health Care Program at Western Michigan University (WMU). She will demonstrate a simple art project.
Gay’s courses at WMU center on expressive arts therapies, illness and end-of-life issues, as well as methods of holistic health. She is an art therapist and worked for Borgess Hospice for eight years for a program she created that offered expressive arts and comfort care for hospice patients and their families.
Gay is an artist and has had a traveling exhibit called "Journey through Cancer" which chronicles visually and with poetry her experience of having had breast cancer and later uterine cancer. She is an 11-year survivor of breast cancer. Gay has a Master's in Holistic Art Therapy from Antioch University, a Certificate in Holistic Health from WMU, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University.
Following the presentation, refreshments will be served and the support group discussion will take place. The discussion will be led by co-facilitators Kim Rogers, Katharine Gaj, and Joan Lewis, who are all health professionals at Three Rivers Health.
This Cancer Support Group is offered free of charge as a service to the community. For more information, call Kim Rogers at Three Rivers Health at 269.273.9757. |
