Digital Mammography
At Three Rives Health, one of our goals is to provide high quality care, locally. That is why in 2010, Three Rivers Health made an investment in state if the art medical imaging equipment with the purchase of new digital mammography equipment and a computer aided detection system.
In standard mammography, images are recorded on film using an x-ray cassette. The film is viewed by the radiologist using a "light box" and then stored in a jacket in the facility’s archives. With digital mammography, the breast image is captured using a special electronic x-ray detector, which converts the image into a digital picture for review on a computer monitor. The digital mammogram is then stored on a computer. With digital mammography, the magnification, orientation, brightness, and contrast of the image may be altered after the exam is completed to help the radiologist more clearly see certain areas.
Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems use a digitized mammographic image that can be obtained from either a conventional film mammogram or a digitally acquired mammogram. The computer software then searches for abnormal areas of density, mass, or calcification that may indicate the presence of cancer. The CAD system highlights these areas on the images, alerting the radiologist to the need for further analysis.
For over 90 years, Three Rivers Health has offered its patients and community technology-driven care, including a wide array of inpatient, rehabilitation, outpatient, wellness, hospice care and specialty clinic services. Three Rivers Health is proud to bring these new systems to our communities and to provide faster and more accurate results to our patients.
